Preferences vs. Needs

In searching for a person to fill the Senior Pastor role we each have a vision as to who or what kind of person we'd like to see standing in our pulpit. These "preferences" are based on our 'human-ness'. We would like someone who would "fit in." Someone who would be a Good Preacher - inspirational! spiritual guide!, but not lay too much guilt on us. Some would like to have a person who would be a Leader - a visionary! energetic! eager to bring new people into the congregation!...but don't mess with the Norwegian Supper and let's be careful about too much contemporary worship. There are those of us who feel a Counselor would be perfect - a good listener! a chaplain!...but hey, let's go on a mission trip to Iringa, and when do building plans get going? A terrific, outgoing, youth oriented pastor would be perfect! - a sense of humor and forward focused...but don't forget we are a congregation that is 150 years old!

Our congregation is at a crossroads. The pastor choice we make will determine how our church grows...or doesn't. Being God's church in a sinful world is not easy. If Jesus says "follow me" and asks us to leave our comfort level behind...are we ready to do that?

Finding a new pastor is not about our preferences. It is about God's purposes!

Your help this week:

Pray that God's will be done...on earth (at Christiania) as it is in heaven.
